An Afternoon of
Awareness Through Movement
Sat, August 16 1-4:30
@ Avenues Yoga
In this workshop you certainly will laugh, and feel enlivened by the swooshing, spiraling, fluid, vitalizing movements we will explore as we look at what happens between here and there.
We have so many transitions in our day to day life. Getting up from the bed, in and out of cars, up and down from our seats, rolling side to side as we sleep, in and out of the refrigerator, up and down from the computer- do you recall how you got to where you are right now? Was it easy? Elegant? Enjoyable? Totally off the radar of your attention?
There is an interesting sensory motor amnesia (to borrow a term from Thomas Hanna) that happens in our transitions. We are sitting, and then we are standing…what happened in between? How did I get here? Sometimes we notice it through a twinge in the back, or a grunt of effort that we take to be a natural sign of aging. Often, we don’t actually know how we got from one place to another.
Transitions can often be a place where we injure ourselves, sometimes repeatedly.
In our profession, most of the back injuries we see are not from some heroic feat, but “I was just getting out of the car when…” “I was just reaching to get the jelly from the fridge when…” When we are not present, we are not so skillful.
In this workshop, we will explore the functions of everyday life: Getting up and down from the ground, in and out of a chair, rolling from side to to side. We will explore how to bring more ease, more elegance, more pleasure and skill (and of course more fun!) to how we move through space.
We will also have some fun time at the end of the workshop as we explore weaving all of our transitions into delightful spontaneity.
