“It’s not happiness that makes us grateful but gratefulness that makes us happy.” – Br. David Steindl Rast

The Most Beautiful Faces I’ve Seen and Fall Class Filling Quickly!

A note from Carl:

Greetings from a chilly, September-feeling morning on Cape Cod! Erin and I traveled here for our annual visit to family and the land of Mary Oliver. (Even though she has moved to Florida, it still feels like she is here in the ponds, the birds, the stones and bones on the beaches.)

The Most Beautiful Faces I've Seen and Fall Class Filling Quickly! We have often shared our love of Brother David Steidl Rast, and the great value of cultivating gratitude as a central foundation in our practice and in our lives.

Recently, Erin and I have been doing an experiment of watching one our favorite 5-minute videos featuring Brother David as part of our daily practice. I have watched this video probably 75 times, and each time there is a kind of inner-reset, along with a fresh blossoming of insight.

On the day before we flew East, the following line landed for me in a new way, and has been living in me as I make my way through airports, stores, beaches- all the interactions I have had with the faces of of unknown people.

“Each person has an has an incredible story behind their face, a story you could never fully fathom. Not only their own story, but the story of their ancestors…we all go back so far. In this present moment, on this day, all the people you meet, all that life from generations and from so many places all over the world flows together and meets you here, like a life giving water if you only open your heart and drink.”

It can be humbling to walk through an airport and notice how much judgement and evaluation can go on in seeing all these other people. Noticing who is pissed and hurrying, who is attractive, who seems like they are from a similar or very different tribe, who is schlumped over a smart phone (most), which families are fighting, the rare smiling, radiant beings. These judgements can be endless, and feel so automatic.

This week’s trip though the airport felt so different with that line from Brother David alive in me. Every face I took in was this kind of miracle, this incredible story of love and loss, and countless generations streaming from many far-flung lands and in this moment, shining through this man in that row of the plane, or through this child screaming and the young mom trying to comfort him, shining through the flight attendant’s face as she dances with all of the needs of the passengers.

This was truly a life-giving stream, and I drank.
Would you like a sip?

Here is the video if you need a refresher. It’s just over 5 minutes long and well worth a watch (even if it’s your 76th time. :) )

PS- We are in the process of switching our emails from Constant Contact to Mailchimp, as some of you might have noticed the difference of format the last couple of weeks. We noticed that several of you did not receive the emails from the new server. SO, if you did not get a newsletter last week or the week before, we recommend you visit our newly redone website www.bodyhappy.com and sign up again to make sure you are on the new list.

PPS Our fall class, Embody Integration: The Head, The Heart and The Hara is filling quickly. It will be an amazing class, and already we have a great group of people coming together. See description below, and please save a spot soon if you are interested. It will likely fill within the next week or two.

We'd love to give you a gift.
