“It’s not happiness that makes us grateful but gratefulness that makes us happy.” – Br. David Steindl Rast

A Sinking Ship, A Precious Occurence, and A Free Download for You

I’m sitting on our porch, bundled up with a vest and scarf, a stack of poetry books, and a pot of green tea. Lovely way to start a fall day. :)

I had such an awesome weekend at Snowbird over the equinox with a fantastic group of women. I feel so deeply grateful to do what I do. And I may be biased, but I find the people we get to work with are the most incredible, wonderful, amazing human beings!!!

I’ve been haunted, in a good way, by a quote of Suzuki Roshi’s this week.

“Life is like setting sail on a ship that is bound to sink.”

It’s true, isn’t it?

We’re all bound for dying, and who knows when?

The preciousness of our temporary aliveness becomes more and more sharp and clear in my awareness….

I continue to ask myself, as Mary Oliver famously asks, “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

It’s all too easy to get caught up in the momentum of everyday life – with momentum doing the steering more than intentionality.

It helps me so much to take the time to pause, reorient, clarify my intentions.

I recently found this photo taken by our dear friend Kim Indresano last summer.

Even though I think I look chubby, I love seeing us with our eyes closed, dreaming big, together. Remembering who we are and where we’re headed. :)

Here’s a poem from Em Claire who reflects on this with more eloquence than I:

Precious Occurrence

I am a
precious occurrence,
and I don’t have long.

We are
a precious occurrence,
and however long we think we have,
we don’t have long.

Too much time is being wasted
running
from face to face
asking, “What is my name?”

If you don’t yet know it,
or if you’ve forgotten,
then become still, go within,
and answer it.

You. . . are a
precious occurrence.

Tell
us your name.

Like the many plants that are dropping their seeds right now, we’ve got some seeds to scatter today as well.

First – please treat yourself to a listen to Russell Delman’s recent public talk given here in Salt Lake on the topic of Gratitude and Grace. Click here to download it. I’ve listened to it several times and find it inspiring and deeply touching. We hope you enjoy. We’re still resonating with the wonderful retreat he offered here a few weeks ago, and we look forward to his return sometime next year.

Second – Carl and I wanted to let you know that we each have some openings in our private practices. Carl has space for two new clients and I have space for one. If you’re called to work with us, please send us an email (click here for Carl or Erin) and we’d be delighted to connect with you. I am lucky enough to be one of Carl’s clients. ;) I’ve just started going through the 10-Sessions of Structural Integration with him again and oh, how I love his work! We’d be delighted to share our love of Feldenkrais, Embodied Life and Structural work with you.

Third, next week I’ll be opening registration for my December Restorative Retreat at Snowbird. First dibs go to people who’ve attended before and those on the early notification list. If you want to be on that list – shoot me an email and let me know. And in November I’ll be opening registration for my Women Embodied course starting in January… if you’d like to be on the early notification list for that one too, please let me know.

Fourth, can I tell you how excited we are for our Costa Rica retreat? Especially as the temperatures are beginning to drop… If you register by 10/1 you get a discount of $100. If you’d like to register, email me and either my wonderful assistant Naomi or I will get back to you with a registration link.

Lastly, have I told you that my mom and step-dad raise alpacas? Sure enough! Around 80 of them, at their lovely ranch in Woodland, Utah. This weekend is their 9th annual Open Barn Days. The Park Record featured an article about it here. You can also visit their website here.

Open Barn Days is this Saturday and Sunday, and we are excited to be going. Perhaps we’ll see you there! It’s a gorgeous spot, and they sell all kinds of beautiful woolly things – hand-dyed yarns, hats, scarves and more. Consider yourself invited. :)

With best wishes and a heartful bow to the precious occurrence that is you,
Erin
We'd love to give you a gift.
